Special Events for 2009 January 17144th Anniversary Program: “Fort Fisher Then and Now.” This annual program takes a new look at Fort Fisher as it was during the years of the Civil War. Highlighting the event is the new temporary exhibit on the Civil War photographer, Timothy O’Sullivan, and his images of the fort, taken shortly after the 2nd Battle of Fort Fisher. Infantry and artillery demonstrations will occur throughout the day. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. March 1 Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown. Ft. Fisher State Historic Site opens for residents of New Hanover County as a part of the countywide “Be a Tourist in your own Hometown!” As a special treat visitors can enjoy artillery demonstrations throughout the afternoon, featuring the bronze 12-lb Napoleon field piece. 1-4 p.m. June 1 to mid-August Mary Holloway Seasonal Interpreter. At scheduled times during the day a costumed guide will offer tours of the remains of the fort, concluding with a small arms weapons demonstration. The seasonal interpreter program is named in honor of the site’s first tour guide. June 27 Garrison Life at Ft. Fisher. Staff and volunteers in period costume engage visitors in daily life in the Confederate garrison. Learn about the activities and duties performed by soldiers in the fort as you watch infantry and artillery demonstrations. Highlighting the event will be the firing of the 32 pound rifled and banded cannon at Shepherd’s Battery. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. October 10 Civilian program: “Hardships on the Home Front.” Civilians in the lower Cape Fear region faced many hardships during the years of the Civil War. Soldiers and civilians alike dealt with shortages of necessary supplies, deadly epidemics, and more.
