Bennett Place

Civil War

This simple farmhouse was situated between Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's headquarters in Greensboro, and Union Gen. William T. Sherman's headquarters in Raleigh. In April 1865, the two commanders met at the Bennett Place, where they signed surrender papers for Southern armies in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida. What's New

Second Saturdays

  • June 12 - Carolina Culture. Photographers, painters and glassmakers showcase and sell their wares, some demonstrations. Costumed interpreters garden, cook, chop wood, etc.
  • July 10 - Textiles and Tar Heels. Knitters, weavers and other craftsmen and women exhibit and sell their wares. Costumed interpreters perform domestic chores.
  • August 14 - Authors of North Carolina. A collection of authors, particularly with a Civil War and North Carolina focus, share their work. Costumed interpreters will give tours.
